Disability Access

The Montgomery College Library is committed to providing equal access for all users and observing the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Library employees provide reasonable accommodations for users with disabilities.

Facilities

All library locations have:

  • Automatic doors for entrance and exit.
  • Elevators.
  • Accessible areas that meet ADA requirements. Some areas may not be easily reached. Please ask for assistance at the service desk to be accommodated in these areas. Wherever possible, comparable services are provided in accessible areas.
  • Service desks that have been designed to accommodate people who use wheelchairs or who need to sit while service is being provided.

Equipment

All library locations have: 

  • Sorenson Video Relay Service (VRS): A free service for hearing impaired users that enables them to conduct video relay calls with faculty and/or staff through a certified American Sign Language interpreter.
  • Scanners to digitize print, allowing it to be viewed on any computer.
  • Height-adjustable furniture. Exact furniture available varies by location.
  • All library locations have USB external DVD drives available for in-library use. In addition, Rockville has a combination VHS/DVD player, and Takoma Park/Silver Spring has a DVD player. The library makes every effort to purchase Closed Captioned materials when available.
  • Desktop video magnifier equipment (CCTVs) to enlarge printed materials.
  • PC workstations with 21-inch monitors and Mac workstations with 27-inch monitors.
  • Two designated workstations with assistive technology software installed.
    JAWS: A screen reader, with Braille support, that includes an internal software speech synthesizer reading aloud what appears on the screen.
    Kurzweil 3000: Text to speech software.
    Zoomtext: Screen magnified/reader for low-vision users.

Services

All library locations offer:

  • Retrieval of books and other materials from the shelves.
  • Assistance in the use of disability support equipment.
  • Interlibrary Loan (ILL) of special needs materials.
  • Option to hold materials at the service desk for users who have difficulty transporting materials.
