Disability Support Services

The Montgomery College Library is committed to providing equal access for all users and observing the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Library employees provide reasonable accommodations for users with disabilities.

Facilities

All library locations have:

  • Automatic doors for entrance and exit.
  • Elevators. At the Takoma Park/Silver Spring library, the elevator requires a key. Ask for assistance at the service desk.
  • Accessible areas that meet ADA requirements. Some areas may not be easily reached. Please ask for assistance at the service desk to be accommodated in these areas. Wherever possible, comparable services are provided in accessible areas.
  • Service desks that have been designed to accommodate people who use wheelchairs or who need to sit while service is being provided.

Equipment

All library locations have:

  • Sorenson Video Relay Service (VRS): A free service for hearing impaired users that enables them to conduct video relay calls with faculty and/or staff through a certified American Sign Language interpreter.
  • Scanners to digitize print, allowing it to be viewed on assistive machines.
  • Height adjustable furniture. Exact furniture available varies by location.
  • Video cassette and DVD player with closed captioning. The library makes every effort to purchase Closed Captioned materials when available.
  • Print enlarging equipment: Topaz (Germantown only).
  • All computer workstations have 21-inch monitors and are equipped with assistive technology.
JAWS: A screen reader, with Braille support, that includes an internal software speech synthesizer reading aloud what appears on the screen.
    Topaz HD Video Magnifier
Kurzweil 3000: Text to speech software.
Zoomtext: Enlarges and enhances everything on the computer screen
